The services worth comparing, and why.
We don't get paid to tell you something is good. Every company here was checked against real customer reviews and complaint patterns before it earned a place on this page — and a few we looked at didn't make the cut. Here's what we found, and why.
How we picked these. We prioritize companies with a consistent track record of customer satisfaction over the highest commission. Where a company had a real pattern of complaints — denied claims, lost items, bad-faith billing — we left it off, even if it's a well-known name. Where two services genuinely serve different needs, we list both rather than force one "best" answer.
Coverage that works when you actually need it
One option for this category — see below for why.
International health insurance services
Strong direct-billing network across Latin America and Europe — your top destination regions. Direct billing matters most when you don't want to fight for reimbursement from a hospital bed. Accepts applicants up to 74–80, one of the highest age ceilings in the industry, and is consistently the budget-friendly choice for retirees.
Get a quote →We also looked at two other well-known providers for this category — both had a real pattern of claim denials and slow, frustrating reimbursement processes in independent reviews. We left them off.
Moving money without losing it to fees
One option for this category — see below for why.
Currency transfer services
Transparent fees, the real mid-market exchange rate (not a marked-up one), and it's become the standard recommendation across the expat community for a reason. Easy to set up, easy to explain to anyone who's never used a service like this before.
Compare rates →Full-service guidance, or DIY if you're comfortable
Full-service expat tax preparation
A real person walks you through the whole filing — built for people who'd rather hand it off than navigate software alone. 25 years specializing exclusively in expat returns, including SSDI and Social Security abroad.
Learn more →DIY expat tax software
Software-based, faster and more affordable if you're comfortable filling in your own answers. Built specifically by and for expats.
One unresolved complaint in our research described a serious filing error and a slow response from the company. Worth confirming your filing carefully either way.

Mail forwarding services
Free check deposit on every plan — useful if you receive paper checks from pensions or Social Security. Founded specifically for expats in 1999, with customers citing 8 to 17+ years of continuous use. The longest, cleanest track record we found in this category.
Learn more →Mail forwarding — alternative
A good fit if you want automatic syncing to Google Drive or Dropbox, or you order from US stores often — their package consolidation can meaningfully cut shipping costs.
Learn more →Note: most virtual mailbox services use a commercial address, which can occasionally cause friction with banks or government agencies expecting a residential one. Worth keeping in mind regardless of which service you choose.
Keeping your US accounts accessible from abroad
Many US banks and brokerages flag or freeze logins from foreign IP addresses. A VPN with US servers prevents that.
VPN services — easiest setup
The most straightforward setup of any VPN we looked at — genuinely easy apps across every device, with live chat support if you get stuck. A good choice if you want something that just works without much fuss.
Learn more →VPN services — best value
Faster, more server locations, and meaningfully cheaper. A strong choice if cost matters and you're comfortable with one extra setup step.

Pet relocation services
Consistently strong, recent reviews with no complaint pattern — including praise for how they handled problems that came up mid-move (vet scheduling mix-ups, transport delays) without it becoming the customer's problem to solve.
Be careful: there's a similarly-named but separate company with a much thinner and more mixed review record. Make sure you're booking the right one — verify the full company name before booking.
Learn more →Pet relocation services — alternative
40+ years in business with a huge volume of strongly positive testimonials and a built-in pet protection plan covering vet expenses and travel delays.
A few complaints describe surprise costs added late in the process. Ask for a fully itemized quote upfront, including crate costs, before booking.

Residency & relocation consulting
Personalized relocation consulting from someone who's actually done this — not a faceless service. One retiree review describes feeling completely overwhelmed before finding this service, and "completely trusted" afterward. That's the kind of fit we look for.
Learn more →Retirement relocation specialists
Works exclusively with retirees — no other client type. If you want a service built around your exact situation rather than a generalist relocation company, this is worth a look.

International moving & shipping services
Owns its own trucks rather than handing your move off to a network of unaccountable agents — the single biggest factor separating the good movers from the bad ones in this industry. Covers all 50 states and 180+ countries.

Specifically praised for communication and avoiding the delay problems common in this industry.
Shares a parent company with another mover we ruled out for a serious complaint pattern. This company's own reviews are meaningfully better — get a fully itemized quote upfront either way.
